Most dog ear infections are very often caused by yeast and bacteria. Ear mites are another common problem, particularly puppies, that may need to be eliminated. Dogs who spend a lot of time swimming are more very prone to ear issues as water could become trapped in the ear. There is also the possibility of moisture from grooming or bathing being the cause. Dogs that are predisposed to ear infections may undergo a reaction to allergens, in which microscopic inflammation of the skin occurs, creating an ideal environment for bacteria and yeast, which are already naturally present in the skin, to overproduce and create irritation and infection.

Whether it is caused by moisture exposure or an allergy, if an ear infection is discovered, the first step is to clean out your canine friend's ears using a gentle cleanser. Do note that this could be rather painful for your furkid, so be as gentle and patient as possible. To clean your fur friend's ears, first fill the ear canal with cleaning solution before using a cotton ball, and then gently massaging the ear at the base. The cotton ball will absorb the debris and excess solution while allowing the cleaning liquid to move throughout the ear canal. Once the ears have been cleaned, let them dry for about ten minutes, longer if your furkid has larger ears. Once dry, you could then add a medicated ointment or drop, such as Wrinkle Balm.
