Can Dogs Eat Celery?

We always – like, always – have celery in the fridge. Soup, salad, stir-fry, even just with some peanut butter. Celery is good for so many things!

But is it good for dogs? There are lots of veggies you can add to your dog’s food bowl, but is celery one of them? Is it something to add to the rotation?

Can dogs eat celery? Let’s check out that crunch!

Celery is a crunchy, low-calorie snack loved by many humans, but can dogs eat celery? The good news is, yes – dogs can eat celery in moderation!

There are a few things to remember, but we’ll start with the good stuff – why we like to feed it.

Celery is a nutritious snack with several potential health benefits for your canine companion:

1. Low in Calories

Celery is an excellent treat for dogs that are on a weight management plan or are prone to gaining weight. Its low-calorie content makes it a guilt-free snack.

2. Rich in Vitamins and Nutrients

  • Vitamin A: Supports healthy skin, coat, and vision.
  • Vitamin K: Aids in blood clotting and bone health.
  • Vitamin C: Boosts immune system function.
  • Potassium: Helps maintain proper muscle and nerve function.

3. High Water Content

Celery is about 95% water, making it a hydrating treat for dogs, especially on hot days.

4. Nature’s Toothbrush

The crunchy texture of celery can help scrape away plaque and freshen your dog’s breath as they chew.

How to Feed Celery to Your Pup

Celery is safe for dogs to eat as long as it is prepared properly and given in appropriate portions. Here are some tips on feeding it.

Firstly, the long, fibrous stalks of celery can pose a choking risk, particularly for smaller dogs. If your dog hasn’t had celery before, cut it up into small, bite-sized pieces to make it easier for your dog to chew and digest. We just mix a few small, raw pieces into our dogs’ regular meals on an occasional basis. But you can also go cooked. Cooked celery is softer and may be easier to chew for dogs with dental issues, but avoid adding salt, butter, or seasonings.

To make the most of it as a toothbrush, we hold longer stalks to make the most of the chewing power – but it means we can monitor easily.

We also look for organic celery whenever we can, and wash it well.

Celery is a safe and healthy treat for most dogs when served properly. Its low-calorie content, vitamins, and hydrating properties make it a great occasional snack. As with any new food, introduce celery gradually and monitor your dog for any adverse reactions. When prepared thoughtfully, celery can be a crunchy, refreshing addition to your dog’s veggie rotation!
