Why Not All Coconut Chips Are Equal: What Makes CocoTherapy's Different

QUICK ANSWER

Most dried coconut is processed at high heat, which makes it harder to digest and damages its healthy fats. CocoTherapy coconut chips are dried slowly at low temperatures, so they break down easily in the gut and keep their nutrients. That makes them a gentle source of fibre and healthy fats for dogs and cats.

Why processing matters

Coconut chips are a great source of fibre and medium-chain fats. But supermarket dried coconut is usually dried at high heat to make it faster and cheaper. That damages the fats, can start them oxidising, and leaves the coconut hard and tough, so it's harder for your pet's gut to break down.

How CocoTherapy coconut chips are made

✓ USDA-certified organic coconuts from their own family farm

✓ Washed in pure, unchlorinated water

✓ Slowly dehydrated at no higher than 37°C (98.6°F)

✓ Vacuum-sealed straight after processing to limit oxidation

✓ Packed in resealable foil pouches and double-packaged for freshness

The water test

CocoTherapy chips break down easily in water, while ordinary dried coconut stays hard. You can try it yourself: put a few CocoTherapy chips and a few supermarket coconut flakes into separate glasses of water, wait a few minutes, then give them a stir. How easily a chip breaks down in water is a good sign of how easily it will break down in your pet's gut.

How I use coconut chips

✓ As a natural fibre boost for constipation or loose stools. Read more in how coconut fibre supports digestion

✓ As a crunchy topper on meals

✓ As a simple treat on their own

Start with a small amount and build up slowly, following the pack directions.

FROM MY EXPERIENCE

BeanBean can get constipated, and coconut chips are what I reach for. Because they also contain coconut's natural fats, I keep the amount within her fat tolerance. Read more about how I support her in coconut oil for dog constipation.

Frequently asked questions

Are coconut chips suitable for pets with a sensitive pancreas?

They contain fat, so keep the amount within your pet's fat tolerance and build up slowly. Read more in coconut oil and pancreatitis.

Can cats eat coconut chips?

Yes, in small amounts. Crumble them over food.

Can I give supermarket desiccated coconut instead?

It's usually dried at high heat and often has added sugar or preservatives, so it isn't the same.
