QUICK ANSWER
Yes, virgin coconut oil can gently help a constipated dog. It lubricates the digestive tract and softens stools, making them easier to pass. It works best alongside the real fix, though: finding out why your dog is constipated in the first place.
What's normal, and what isn't
Most dogs poop one to three times a day, usually roughly in step with their meals. A dog on two meals a day typically goes about twice. If your dog is eating normally but going less often, or struggling when they do, constipation is likely.
Signs your dog is constipated
- Straining or squatting, sometimes circling, without passing much
- Small, hard, dry stools
- Going less often than usual
- Eating less or seeming flat and low on energy
- Discomfort, or scooting
Why dogs get constipated
The most common causes I see:
- Too much bone in a raw diet. Pale, chalky, crumbly stools are the giveaway. This is one of the most common issues in new raw feeders.
- Sudden diet changes, including new treats. Any change should be made gradually.
- Not enough moisture, especially on a dry kibble diet.
- The wrong amount of fibre. Too little fibre can slow things down, but too much can cause constipation too, especially without enough water to go with it.
- Not enough movement and sluggish lymph drainage. This is a cause I look at that's often overlooked. Regular activity keeps the gut moving, and it keeps lymph flowing too. The gut is one of the body's biggest producers of lymph, and lymph has no pump of its own: it relies on movement and breathing to flow. When a dog moves less, lymph drainage slows, waste and inflammation linger around the gut, and digestion slows with it. Constipation then adds to the body's waste load, creating a loop that keeps both systems stuck. This is why I always pair constipation support with gentle movement, hydration and belly massage.
- Joint pain. Dogs with hip dysplasia or osteoarthritis may find squatting painful, so they hold it in or don't fully empty.
- Pain medication. Some pain medications slow the gut. If constipation started after a new medication, let your vet know.
- Swallowed hair, grass or foreign objects.
- Stress or a change in routine.

How much to give
Recommended amount: up to 1 teaspoon per 4.5kg (10lb) of body weight daily, mixed into food. You can split it across two meals.
First time feeding coconut oil? Start with about ¼ of that amount and build up over 2 weeks. Too much too fast can swing things the other way, into loose stools.
Other ways to help
✓ Add moisture to meals. Water, bone broth, or switching to fresh food all help.
✓ Get the fibre balance right. Plain pumpkin or unsweetened coconut chips add gentle bulk and help stools move. Avoid sweetened desiccated coconut from the baking aisle, which is processed and harder to digest. More isn't always better: add fibre gradually, with plenty of moisture. ✓ If you raw feed, check your bone ratio. Chalky stools usually mean too much bone. Reducing it slightly often fixes constipation within days.
✓ Keep your dog moving. Regular walks keep both the gut and lymph flowing. For older dogs or those with joint pain, short, gentle walks are better than none.
✓ Try a gentle belly massage. Slow, circular strokes on the belly can help encourage movement in the gut.

See your vet promptly if your dog:
- hasn't passed stool in over 48 hours
- is vomiting, lethargic or off their food
- has a hard, painful or swollen belly
- has blood in their stool
These can be signs of a blockage or another issue that needs urgent care.
