How One Woman’s Journey Made the Dog Grooming Industry Safer
Welcome to 4-Legger — where our mission began with love, loss, and a promise to make pet care truly safe.
I’m Melissa, founder of 4-Legger. My journey began when my dog Henry Clay was diagnosed with cancer. To help him heal, we began eliminating environmental toxins from our lives — starting with his grooming products. We trusted shampoo bottles that claimed to be “all natural” and “organic,” but later learned these words have no regulatory meaning in the dog grooming industry.
Even products filled with harmful ingredients — linked to allergies, hormone disruption, dry skin, and even cancer — can legally be marketed as “natural.” When I was later diagnosed with breast cancer myself, the truth became painfully clear: we had been misled. The pet grooming industry needed change.
So, we set out to create a truly organic, chemical-free alternative. Every 4-Legger product is free from synthetic chemicals, independently reviewed, and certified to meet the highest USDA organic standards — the same used for food.

How Canine Cancer Changed Our Lives?
When Henry Clay got cancer in 2009, it was the beginning of a life-changing journey.

2009: Henry Clay diagnosed with penile cancer caused by toxins. Despite surgeries, the cancer spread to his brain stem. He was given months to live but fought for 13 more.

2013: On the day Henry Clay passed, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.

2014: During chemotherapy, my dogs developed dry, flaky skin from frequent baths with so-called “natural” shampoos. Research revealed the shocking truth: dog shampoos aren’t regulated by the FDA.

2015: We decided to change the industry by creating a truly organic dog shampoo. Our first product, Lemongrass & Aloe, was launched the same week I finished chemotherapy.

The Largest Organ Needs Protection: A dog’s epidermis is only 3–5 cells thick (compared to 10–15 in humans). Their skin absorbs far more.

Artificial Colors (D&C, FD&C dyes) – linked to cancer.

Synthetic Chemicals
Most dog grooming products labeled as “natural” or “organic” are not regulated, meaning brands can add synthetic chemicals and still make misleading claims. In fact, only 2% of dog shampoos on the market are truly all-natural and organic.

Synthetic chemicals have been linked to itchy skin, allergies, hormone disruption, and even cancer. They also contribute to long-term environmental pollution.

GMO crops are treated with toxic herbicides like 2,4-D, which leave harmful residues. These contribute to “superweeds” and contaminate soil and water.

Important Facts About Dog Grooming Products:
Artificial colors are synthetic dyes generally produced from petroleum. While the dyes may be FDA-approved for use in cosmetics, they do have linkages to organ system toxicity (non-reproductive) and are known to bioaccumulate (can build up in the system). If that doesn't convince you to avoid it, FD&C and D&C colors are bituminous coal derivatives that are continuously tested on animals due to their carcinogenic properties. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A nitrogen rich compound that promotes the healing of skin. It is synthetic or derived from the urine of animals or plants (like Comfrey). You'll need to verify the source of this ingredient given the high number of synthetics. NOT BAD but SYNTHETIC.
Note: Allantoin is considered a drug and should be regulated by the FDA.
A synthetic surfactant (cleaning and foaming agent) that contains PEG (polyethylene glycol). May be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A synthetic foaming agent that has links to organ system toxicity. BAD & SYNTHETIC.
Balsam is a natural stimulant, antiseptic and analgesic. It is great for muscle and joint conditions, respiratory conditions, inflammation and will help to naturally reduce cortisol levels. It is generally non-toxic, non-irritant, and non-sensitizing. SAFE & NATURAL.
As with all essential oils, using a high grade essential oil that has been naturally extracted is imperative for the health and safety of your pet!
While botanical extracts sounds like they are single ingredient extracts, that may not be the case. Take for example a cherry botanical extract - it may be extracted into parabens or it may be extracted into glycerine and water. Since there is no way to know, we've added it as a caution but noted they are likely natural. NOT BAD & NATURAL.
Note: If it is mixed with a synthetic, the safety of the ingredient can dramatically change.
Castile soap is the most gentle all natural cleaning solution available on the market. It is made with saponified oils! SAFE & NATURAL.
Typically used in dog grooming products to adjust the pH of the product closer to the pH of your dog's eyes (pH 7 - neutral) to reduct eye irritation so the manufacturer can claim "tear free". Unfortunately, these same shampoos use ingredients that you would not want on your dog's eyes. So, yes they may be tear free, but the product is not safe and non-toxic! SAFE & NATURAL.
As a note, your dog's skin is better served by a more alkaline pH and you being careful around their eyes. Also, some dogs may have skin sensitivity to citric acid although rare.
A foaming agent that has links to organ system toxicity and contamination concerns. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A foam producer that started as a coconut and has been chemically altered into a moderate cancer causer, hormone and thyroid disruptor and an organ toxin. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
Is a synthetic used as a foaming, cleansing, conditioning, and thickening agent. It made from reaction of coconut oil fatty alcohols and fruit sugar (glucose). While synthetic is it considered safe with minimal links to allergies. SAFE but SYNTHETIC.
Not all coconut oil is the same. 4-Legger uses USDA certified organic coconut oil - a natural cleaner to improve your dog's skin. SAFE & NATURAL.
A silicon based ingredient that helps to provide skin conditioning. It is linked to organ system toxicity and is not planet friendly (ecotoxicology). BAD & SYNTHETIC.
Used as a preservative that slowly releases small amounts of antimicrobial formaldehyde over time. Many dogs have or can develop formaldehyde allergies/sensitivities. It also may cause skin or eye irritation. Formaldehyde is linked to cancer. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A known cancer causing preservative that is also linked with allergies and skin sensitivities. Slow releasing formaldehyde preservatives include Diazolidinyl urea, Imidazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, and Quaternium-15. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A "catch all" for added scent that generally means it has a lot of ingredients linked to allergies and immune issues. Most have links to organ system toxicity and are not friendly to the planet (ecotoxicology). VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A by-product of the process of saponification, it is a natural humectant. SAFE & NATURAL.
Used as a skin conditioner and thickener to retain moisture and hydration. SAFE & NATURAL.
Used as a preservative that slowly releases small amounts of antimicrobial formaldehyde over time. Many dogs have or can develop formaldehyde allergies/sensitivities. It also may cause skin or eye irritation. Formaldehyde is linked to cancer. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A mild antiseptic, cleaner and disinfectant that is VERY drying to your dog's skin causing irritation to your dog's skin. It can affect your dog's nervous system and cause organ system toxicity. Many "dry" dog shampoos may use alcohol to quickly "dry" your dog. Yikes! VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A true gift from nature, lavender is an analgesic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, insecticide, rubefacient, stimulant, tonic, deodorant, and more! SAFE & NATURAL.
A foam booster with links to organ system toxicity and contamination concerns by nitrosamines - with links to cancer. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A pH adjuster that has links to organ system toxicity and skin irritation. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A cleaning agent (surfactant) with strong possibilities of contamination by ethylene oxide or 1,4-dioxane with links to cancer. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
Mineral oil is derived from petroleum used in fragrances and for conditioning of skin products. It blocks pores and does not let the skin breathe. It has links to organ system toxicity. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A natural anti-inflammatory, anti-irritant, and moisturizing characteristics that can soothe, smooth, and nourish your dog's skin and coat. SAFE & NATURAL.
Rich in vitamins, minerals, natural fatty acids, and antioxidants to nourish, rejuvenate, and guard your dog's skin. SAFE & NATURAL.
Parabens are a class of preservatives or fragrances that are not planet friendly (ecotoxic) with strong ties to hormone (endocrine system) disruption. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
Works to balance the sebum on your dog's skin and coat while increasing the blood flow to the skin to heal and provide protection against bacteria and viruses. SAFE & NATURAL.
Derived from petroleum (not planet friendly - ecotoxic) with links to organ system toxicity with contamination concerns by PAHS - with links to endocrine disruption, cancer, bioaccumulation, and organ system toxicity. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
Note: There are many different brands of petroleum jelly with a vast spectrum of ingredient purity. While we'd not use it on ourselves or our dogs, if you are going to use it, make sure you buy a reputable name brand.
A relatively new preservative. Let's first note that it is safer than some other preservatives like formaldehyde, paraben, and methylisothiazolinone preservatives. There is some evidence that it may cause skin irritation or allergies in some dogs and that it may have links to organ system toxicity. BAD & SYNTHETIC.
It is also is a sensitizer meaning your dog can develop an allergic reaction to it after using it for some time with no problems.
Note: This is a synthetic ingredient that is not allowed by Ecocert for use in natural or organic products. If the bottle says "natural" or "organic" and it also says "phenoxyethanol" you would be wise to avoid any products manufactured by this company.
We gave this ingredient a green rating but want to point out a caution. There are animal and petroleum sources so you will need to ask for the ingredient source wen you see this ingredient listed. SAFE but SYNTHETIC.
A synthetic combination of 4 glycerine molecules into 1 large molecule that makes it more moisturizing, added to a fatty acid under alkaline conditions - that joins the 2 chemicals into one new molecule.
It is generally regarded as a safe and effective moisturizer - certainly safer than the alternatives like polyethylene glycol (PEG) and triethanolamine (TEA). It is also approved to be used in ECOCERT certified organic products.
Works to hold on to moisture but has some links to organ system toxicity. Concerns with contamination by ethylene dioxide and 1,4-dioxane (both linked to cancer) from the manufacturing process. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
A surfactant and emulsifier that may have contamination concerns by ethylene dioxide and 1,4-dioxane (both linked to cancer) from the manufacturing process. Has possible linkages to organ system toxicity. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.

They do however have similar qualities when it comes to propensity of being irritating to the skin.

VERY BAD eventhough NATURAL.
Used as a cleaner and a pH adjuster. Known to have links to organ system toxicity and a skin allergen. Has the possibility of containing nitrosamines which are linked to cancer. VERY BAD & SYNTHETIC.
This ingredient is where you have to put a lot of trust in the manufacturer to ensure they are purchasing a plant based high grade (expensive) source. If a manufacturer skimps and purchases a lower grade petroleum based less expensive ingredient there could be contamination concerns from hydroquinone. SAFE & NATURAL.
Natural = d alpha-tocopherol
Synthetic = dl alpha-tocopheryl
Used to help prevent ingredients from separating and as a thickening agent, it is very safe and non-toxic. SAFE but SYNTHETIC.
Xanthan gum is considered a synthetic made from fermentation and is on the accepted list of ingredients for use in USDA Organic products.

We get it. There are a LOT of dog shampoo companies that claim to have all natural and organic products, you need to do your homework! Our organic dog shampoo really is organic - USDA Certified through the National Organic Program.
We don't use a few organic ingredients and then make misleading claims. Our PRODUCTS are USDA certified to organic. You can rest assured that you are getting a true all natural dog shampoo!
Is 4-Legger cruelty free?
Yes! We are Certified Cruelty Free by Leaping Bunny. All of our ingredients are safe and non-toxic! We do test 4-Legger first on ourselves to see if we like the essential oil blends. Once we are happy with the blends we do a lot of dog washing to make sure your pups will love it as much as we do!

What Is The Difference In The Shampoos?
The difference is primarily in the bases.

Does 4-Legger contain sulfates or other potentially toxic ingredients?
No. Our shampoo does NOT contain ANY of the ingredients commonly found in traditional pet shampoos. 4-Legger will never contain ANY of the following ingredients - you have our promise!

Does 4-Legger dry out skin and strip the natural oils from my dog's coat?
4-Legger will not dry your dog's skin or strip the natural oils. In fact, it will do quite the opposite! Over the years, soap has gotten a bad reputation because manufacturers who produce soap sell the glycerin that is developed during the soap making process (saponification). Glycerin is natural humectant - it absorbs water from the air and attracts moisture to the skin and hair. Only the highest quality soaps retain the glycerin. Other manufacturers sell the glycerin or use them in other products that they manufacture like lotions to treat dry skin as they command higher prices!
Also, these poor quality and mass market soaps usually have free alkali in them, making them harsh and drying. This is great for shelf life - and it increases the lather. It is also drying to the skin.
Free alkali will find every last bit of the natural oils in your dog's skin and coat and saponify them (turn them into soap), leaving your dog dry and "squeaky clean". Too high a coconut oil percentage in the formulation. the addition of artificial color and fragrance increases the probability that the soap will be drying.
4-Legger retains 100% of the glycerin in the product and there are no free alkalis in our formulations.
Why is the consistency of the shampoo so thin?
Great question. The short answer is we left out the bad stuff!
Here is the longer answer: The ingredients that make non-organic shampoo thicker are not allowed in organic products. These thickeners are inferior products (sulfates) that are less expensive, more used to what the consumer is used to, but pose health risks when used on your dog.
We can use vegetable guar gum to make organic shampoo thicker; but, it does reduce lather.
We're not thick headed - we chose lather over a thicker consistency! We know our customers value lather!
Can I use 4-Legger on my cat?
Can I use 4-Legger products on myself?
Absolutely! All of our ingredients are human grade and safe and non-toxic. We use 4-Legger products on ourselves and we get reports of customers doing the same.
One of our customers said that while he bought 4-Legger for his dog he began to use it in the shower- from his head to his toes and while shaving. Since using 4-Legger he hasn't had to add moisturizer after shaving - which he had done for over a century! Way to go 4-Legger!
My shampoo got cloudy when it got cold. Is it safe to use?
It is absolutely safe to use. As the temperature drops, jojoba oil may become cloudy and solidify. That is completely normal. It occurs from the hardening of the fats and waxes. Once the product is back to room temperature, it will return to its stable appearance.
Can I use 4-Legger on my guinea pig?
Yes, you can! A guinea pig's skin is very sensitive and more alkaline (basic) than a dog or cat so many dog shampoos will be very drying for guinea pigs.
Almost all human shampoos and many dog shampoos are too acidic for a dog or cat (or any small animal). When you use a product that is too acidic (the pH is 6 or lower), the protective layer of a dogs skin becomes irritated and causes them to scratch because they are itchy. Prolonged use of that type of product can actually destroy the protective layer and become a gateway for all kinds of skin infections and other conditions. That's why it is so important to never use human products on dogs, cats, or guinea pigs!
Is it safe to use 4-Legger on my puppy?
We recommend using our hypoallergenic dog shampoos on puppies. As with any product, keep it out of their eyes. You can do this by using a wash cloth to carefully wash their face.
How often should I bathe my dog?
It really depends upon the dog, climate, breed, level of activity, and of course how much they like to roll in muck! A dog with an oily coat may need to bathed more frequently while dogs with short hair or water-repellent, thick, or double coats can be bathed less frequently.
On average once or twice a month will maintain a healthy coat!
Will 4-Legger damage my concrete or pavers if I wash my dog outdoors?
If you live in an area with hard water, the hard water can react with the natural fats from the oils and create a white "film" on your concrete or pavers. The longer the oils and the hard water have to react, the harder it will be to rinse off - making it look like a white film.
To avoid this, wash your dog in the grass! If you do wash on concrete or pavers, we recommend rinsing it off into your yard immediately after you bathing. 4-Legger is 100% biodegradable, safe, and non-toxic. It won't harm wildlife or your 4-Leggers!
If you do forget to wash it off and you do get the white film, you can use vinegar to clean it off! Also, remember you don't need a lot of product for it to work! Go easy when you are pouring it out!
If 4-Legger is non-toxic why does it say "do not ingest" on the bottle?
Since 4-Legger's products are certified through the National Organics Program, we must also meet labeling requirements as set forth by the US Food and Drug Administration.
You could ingest 4-Legger and it it is non-toxic but it likely wouldn't taste very good!
All dog shampoo should carry this warning; but, unfortunately since there are no regulations that requires them to do so, they don't!

How soon will I notice a difference?
Most customers will notice a difference after the first bath or after the first application of paw and nose protector. We have had customers tell us that after the first bath their dog wasn't scratching anymore.
There are a lot of factors that can make your dog itchy. Their shampoo is just one of those factors. If your dog is still scratching after use, you should look at their food, allergies, and thyroid health.
One of the dogs in our pack has thyroid issues. She has been helped by adding natural salmon oil into her daily diet.
My dog licks off the paw protector after we apply it. Is it safe?
Yes. Our products are safe and non-toxic and while some is licked off, there is likely enough left on the paws after applied for it to do its job. We suggest applying when your dog is winding down to go to sleep, after a big play session, or when distracting them with their favorite toy or a treat.
What is Tocopherol? That doesn't sound very natural.
Tocopherol is a derivative of Vitamin E. It is one of the few preservatives approved for use in certified organic products. Most of our products contain Rosemary Extract as a preservative; however, to maintain shelf life some of our products needed additional preservatives.
