The Lauric Acid Debate: Is It Good for Your Pet?

QUICK ANSWER

Lauric acid is the star ingredient in coconut oil, and yes, it's good for your pet. It makes up about half of virgin coconut oil, and the body converts it into monolaurin, a compound with natural antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. The debate is mostly about how to classify it, not whether it's beneficial.

What is lauric acid?

Lauric acid is a saturated fatty acid with 12 carbon atoms (C12). It's the most abundant fatty acid in virgin coconut oil. It's also found naturally in breast milk, which is part of how it supports young immune systems.

What's the debate?

Fats are grouped by length:

Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs)

6–12 carbons long. They're absorbed quickly and used for energy.

Long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs)

14 carbons or more. They're digested more slowly and are more easily stored.

At 12 carbons, lauric acid sits at the edge of the medium-chain group. Some argue that it behaves more like a long-chain fat in the body, and so shouldn't count as one of coconut oil's "healthy" MCTs.

Where I stand

Lauric acid is officially classified as a medium-chain fatty acid by the chemistry databases ChEBI, PubChem and ChemSpider. The American Oil Chemists' Society has also concluded, based on scientific evidence, that lauric acid is metabolised as a medium-chain fat and not as a long-chain fat. Claims that lauric acid is processed like a long-chain fat, or that it's harmful, aren't supported by the published research.

In short: lauric acid is classified as a medium-chain fatty acid, and the evidence shows the body metabolises it as one, not as a long-chain fat.

Its benefits include:

✓ Natural antimicrobial support: the body turns lauric acid into monolaurin, which helps fight bacteria, viruses and fungi. This is behind coconut oil's success with ringworm and dental health.

✓ Gut support: it helps maintain a healthy gut environment.

✓ Quick energy: like other MCFAs, it's readily used as fuel.

Why therapeutic grade matters

The amount of lauric acid varies a lot between coconut oils. Therapeutic-grade coconut oil like CocoTherapy Organic Virgin Coconut Oil contains at least 53% lauric acid, compared with an average of 45% in grocery store brands. More lauric acid means more of the benefits you're using coconut oil for.

Frequently asked questions

Is lauric acid the same as MCT oil?

Not quite. Many MCT oils are made mostly of caprylic and capric acid, with little lauric acid. Virgin coconut oil is naturally rich in lauric acid, so the two work a little differently.

Is lauric acid safe for cats?

Yes, in the small amounts found in coconut oil, introduced slowly.

Can I get lauric acid from other foods?

Coconut oil is by far the richest natural source. Smaller amounts are found in palm kernel oil and dairy.
