Keeping Cats Cool in Singapore: 8 Simple Ways to Beat the Heat

QUICK ANSWER

Cats are good at hiding discomfort, so heat stress can sneak up on them. In Singapore's year-round heat and humidity, a few simple habits keep them cool, comfortable and hydrated.

1. Keep water fresh and easy to reach

Put out several water bowls around the home and refresh them often. Many cats prefer running water, so a water fountain can encourage them to drink more.

2. Feed moisture-rich food

Fresh, wet or raw food adds water to your cat's diet. That matters, since cats naturally don't drink much. Dry kibble alone makes it harder for them to stay hydrated.

3. Create cool resting spots

Give your cat access to shaded, airy spots, such as tiled floors, a cool bathroom, or a cooling mat.

4. Keep air moving

Fans and air-conditioning help, especially during the hottest part of the day. Make sure your cat can move away from the airflow if they want to.

5. Brush regularly

Brushing removes loose fur, so the coat doesn't trap as much heat. Long-haired cats need it most.

6. Use a damp cloth

Gently stroke your cat with a damp cloth. It mimics their own grooming, and the moisture cools them as it evaporates.

7. Offer cool treats

Freeze small cubes of bone broth or a little wet food as a cooling treat. Plain coconut oil frozen in tiny amounts works too.

8. Protect sensitive skin

White or light-coloured cats can get sunburned on their ear tips and nose. Keep them out of strong sun near windows and balconies.

Signs of heatstroke in cats

Get to a vet straight away if your cat shows:

  • Panting or open-mouth breathing (unusual for cats)
  • Drooling, or bright red gums and tongue
  • Restlessness, weakness or wobbliness
  • Vomiting or collapse

While you're on the way, move your cat somewhere cool and dampen their fur with cool (not cold) water.

Frequently asked questions

Are some cats more at risk?

Yes. Flat-faced breeds like Persians, senior cats, overweight cats, and cats with heart or breathing problems are more vulnerable to heat.

Should I shave my long-haired cat?

Generally no. Their coat helps regulate temperature and protects their skin. Regular brushing is better.
