QUICK ANSWER

Yes, dogs can eat celery in moderation. It's low in calories, about 95% water, and has vitamins and minerals that support skin, bones and immunity. Gently cook and purée it, or juice it raw, serve it plain, and give it as part of a vegetable rotation, not a main food.

Benefits

Low in calories

A good snack for dogs on a weight-management plan. Read more in helping your dog reach a healthy weight.

Vitamins and minerals

Vitamin A for skin, coat and eyes, vitamin K for blood clotting and bones, vitamin C for immunity, and potassium for muscles and nerves.

Hydration

About 95% water, so it's refreshing on Singapore's hot days.

How to serve it safely

1

Choose organic celery whenever possible, and wash it well.

2

Gently cook it, then purée it to a baby-food consistency. Dogs can't break down the tough plant cell walls in vegetables on their own, so puréeing lets them actually absorb the nutrients. This applies to all vegetables.

3

Or juice it raw, then blend the pulp back in with the juice. Don't throw the pulp away, as that's where the fibre is.

4

Plain only: no salt, butter or seasonings.

5

Start small and watch for any tummy upset.

FROM MY EXPERIENCE

Celery was a regular part of Wangcai's diet. It's a low-glycaemic vegetable, so it was a good choice to help support him while we managed his yeast issues. Read more about how I handled his infections in coconut oil for pet infections.

Frequently asked questions

How much celery can I give?

A small amount of purée or juice mixed into meals, as part of a vegetable rotation.

Can cats eat celery?

A tiny amount is fine, but cats need very little plant matter.
