What's In The Gut Microbiome Health Test Kit?
🧪 How to collect your pet's poo
💡 Pro-Tip for Best Results: AnimalBiome recommends discontinuing all probiotics for 24 hours before collecting a stool sample.
Step 1: Fresh Sample

Collect a fresh stool sample (within 4 hours of elimination, or first thing in the morning for cats).

Step 2: Prepare Supplies
  • Uncap both sample tubes (be careful not to spill the clear liquid inside).
  • Place both tubes into the tube-stabilizing holes inside the kit box.
  • Open one package of swabs and the wrapped wooden stick.
Step 3: Collect Stool Sample
  • Put on the gloves.
  • Break open the stool using the wooden stick to expose the center (uncontaminated by dirt or debris).
  • Scoop a pea-sized piece of stool from the inner section using a swab and place it into the tube.
  • Ensure stool is completely submerged in liquid, then screw the cap back on tightly to prevent leakage.
  • Repeat the exact procedure for the second tube using the second swab.
💩 Special Handling for Soft Stool, Hard Stool & Diarrhea:
  • Very Soft Stool / Diarrhea: Dip the swab directly into the stool, avoiding external contaminants. Swirl the swab tip in the liquid to transfer as much material as possible until the liquid changes color.
  • Very Hard Stool: Use the swab or wooden stick to firmly transfer the sample into the tube.
Step 4: Register & Package Sample
  1. Register your sample online by creating an account and pet profile at app.animalbiome.com.
  2. Place the sealed sample tubes inside the clear plastic bag containing the white absorbent sheet.
  3. Place the bagged tubes inside the smaller bubble mailer and seal it tightly.
  4. Place the sealed bubble mailer into the provided white/grey shipping mailer bag.

Product FAQ

Click on a category below to explore frequently asked questions regarding testing science, sample collection, registration, shipping logistics, and report interpretation:

🔬 Testing Science, Accuracy & Reference Data +

Q: What is fecal microbiome testing and what are the benefits?

Fecal microbiome testing is the process of sequencing bacterial DNA material from a small stool sample. AnimalBiome can detect all known bacteria from your pet's sample to provide a comprehensive report. Testing provides deep insights so that specific bacterial imbalances can be addressed to alleviate chronic symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and itchy skin.

Q: How do you determine if my animal is healthy? What is the reference database?

AnimalBiome has built the world’s largest database of companion animal microbiome samples, analyzing over 30,000 samples. From this dataset, they established a Healthy Reference Set consisting of 22 core bacterial taxa for cats and 17 core bacterial taxa for dogs to benchmark your pet's unique ecosystem against optimal health profiles.

Q: What beneficial bacteria does the test screen for and what makes them beneficial?

The Gut Health Test screens for key beneficial groups including: Clostridium hiranonis (Peptacetobacter hiranonis), Turicibacter sanguinis, Faecalibacterium spp., Blautia spp., Fusobacterium spp., Subdoligranulum spp., Megasphaera spp., Bifidobacterium spp., and Bacteroides spp.

These bacteria fulfill essential physiological roles, including reducing bowel inflammation, producing vital metabolic molecules, improving immune system function, and aiding digestion.

Q: Will this test show if my pet has a parasitic infection?

No. The Gut Health Test looks specifically at the bacterial DNA microbiome, which does not cover parasites like Giardia, hookworms, or roundworms.

Q: Will this test tell me what foods my pet is allergic to?

No. The Gut Health Test analyzes bacterial populations, which does not measure food allergies or environmental intolerances. To pinpoint food sensitivities, please explore our Glacier Peak Pet Intolerance Test instead.

💩 Sample Collection & Preparation Guidance +

Q: How fresh does the stool sample need to be for analysis?

For dogs, collect a sample as soon as your dog poops and bring it to your sampling area right away. For cats, the stool sample should be less than 4 hours old (or collected first thing in the morning).

Q: Do I need to discontinue supplements or medications before sampling?

AnimalBiome recommends discontinuing all probiotics and antibiotics for at least 24 hours prior to collecting a stool sample for the cleanest baseline metrics.

Q: My pet is having diarrhea. Can I still send a sample?

Yes! The testing protocol is carefully optimized for soft stools or liquid diarrhea. Simply dip and coat the swab tip thoroughly in the sample, swirl it in the preservation liquid inside the tube, and submerge the tip before sealing.

Q: What if my sample contains dirt, debris, or cat litter?

It is completely okay if small environmental particles or cat litter cling to the sample. While cleaner samples can be processed slightly faster, the lab's extraction methods isolate bacterial DNA cleanly. Just do your best!

💻 Digital Kit Registration & Sample ID Troubleshooting +

Q: How do I register my sample online?

1. Visit app.animalbiome.com to create an account and pet profile.
2. Click “Register Sample” at the top of the portal.
3. Enter your unique 6-character Sample ID code.

⚠️ Note: Samples MUST be registered online for AnimalBiome scientists to complete laboratory analysis.

Q: Where do I find my pet’s Sample ID code?

Your 6-character code is printed directly on the sample tubes themselves as well as on the front cover of your physical kit instruction booklet.

Q: What if my pet’s Sample ID is not accepted by the portal?

First, carefully double-check the characters printed on your tube. If the code continues to show an error, please email AnimalBiome directly at team@animalbiome.com for immediate verification assistance.

🚗 Managed FedEx Add-Ons & Shipping Logistics +

Q: Is my sample safe while traveling in the mail?

Yes! The sample tubes contain a specialized buffer liquid that stabilizes and perfectly preserves bacterial DNA across extreme temperature variations for several months.

Q: Can JOOF handle the international shipping back to the USA for me?

Yes! Simply select or purchase our managed FedEx For Me option at checkout. We provide pre-paid FedEx return bags and handle all customs clearance documentation directly.

Q: Do I need multiple "FedEx For Me" options for multiple pets?

No! Our FedEx courier fee is billed per single address pickup trip. For multi-pet households, order your test kits under the SHIP MYSELF option and attach just one (1) FedEx Add-On Service to your cart.

🛒 Add 1x FedEx Courier Service to Cart

📊 Interpreting Results, Consultations & Re-Testing +

Q: Can I interpret the report by myself without a review session?

We do not recommend self-interpreting raw DNA microbiome metrics. The sequencing report contains deep biological data, and guidance from a trained consultant ensures you extract actionable dietary and supplement strategies tailored to your pet's needs.

Q: How do I access my 15-minute phone consultation with AnimalBiome?

Every test result includes a complimentary 15-minute Phone Consultation with an AnimalBiome gut microbiome expert (US time zones). Once your report arrives, email team@doggybiome.com (for dogs) or team@kittybiome.com (for cats) to schedule your call or submit written questions.

Q: Do you offer local in-house nutrition consultations for diet changes?

Yes! If you need dedicated guidance on building a customized home-cooked, cooked, or raw diet plan based on your results, you can consider a private consultation with our in-house Certified Professional Pet Nutritionist.

🐾 Explore JOOF PawConsult →

Q: Do you recommend re-testing, and how often should it be done?

Because gut bacterial populations shift over time due to diet changes, medication exposure, and environmental factors, running a re-test on a yearly basis is recommended during active gut restoration protocols. For healthy, symptom-free pets, re-testing every 2 years provides excellent preventative health monitoring.
