About Dr. Ava Frick

Veterinarian, Speaker, Author.

At three, she knew she would be an animal doctor; not that she ever made a decision for that to be her purpose. Perhaps, it simply exists in her spiritual DNA, because her passion to save lives never has waned. In fact, it has expanded beyond her being a “doctor.” Importantly, three significant events shape-shifted her into the healer that she is today: an accident, an attack, and a sports mishap. A horse accident when she was nine helped her realize that she is more than a body. Near death, she watched from above as her parents stood helplessly over her nearly lifeless body. She consciously decided to return, wanting to learn more about living.

In 1985, an attack from a large dog at a veterinary hospital where she worked left her facing two surgeries on her left arm. Oddly, the experience left her more compassionate toward animals in need of surgery or hospitalization. Three years later, a women’s soccer match incident blasted her body and left her unable to stand up straight. The next morning, a local Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) adjusted her spine. She walked immediately, and her professional focus shifted.

Today, her mission includes writing, speaking and teaching the world how we might change the healing paradigm for all people and animals on Earth. Motherhood at 39 further altered her perspectives about life, the medical model, her veterinary practice successes and failures; and what her future, and those of her patients, required to not only survive but also flourish. A year later, she attained certification in Animal Chiropractic.

With more than herself to care for, whole-food nutrition took a front seat. She immersed herself into the work of Dr. Royal Lee. What organ and body system needs which vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and the like, and how these can be utilized to improve body function peaked h r interest every evening after her son was in bed. By 2002, Lee’s company, Standard Process, Inc., asked her to represent them to veterinarians across America. She stayed on as a marketing consultant for several years.

As her depth of understanding of nutrition and organ function deepened, physical-therapy and pain-management conferences became her arena of choice. While safety studies had been done on animals, no veterinarian had studied and applied the benefits of Alpha-Stim Microcurrent Therapy to animals. In short order, Electromedical Products International named her their Veterinary Medical Director. Recognition as the world’s leading authority in veterinary microcurrent therapy came with the publication of my first article on the subject in 2005 in the pages of the international Journal of Equine Veterinary Science (JEVS) by Elsevier.

The next decade was a whirlwind of successes

  • In 2006, Dr. Ava Frick was Hartz Mountain Veterinarian of the Year Runner-Up. Their award honors veterinarians who demonstrate outstanding commitment to patients, their families, and their communities.
  • 2007 saw Dr. Ava Frick book Fitness in Motion: Keeping Your Equine’s Zones at Peak Performance published by the prestigious Lyons Press.
  • Moving online her continued focus on whole-food nutrition, she lectured to veterinarians across the nation, complemented her line of learning DVDs.
  • 2013 found Dr. Ava Frick selected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Stress and published for her human-animal-bond articles for their magazines, Combat Stress and Contentment.
  • Dr. Ava Frick introduced her Tai Chi-huahua low-impact-exercise program at a conference in 2016.
In November 2015 Dr. Frick was awarded the honor of being inducted into the Animal Chiropractic Hall of Fame. She was one of the first 4 selected to receive this distinguished recognition from doctors (certified chiropractors or veterinarians) practicing internationally in the field of animal chiropractic. This award was voted on by her peers and is based on contributions made to the development of this profession over the past 25 years.

For all that success, however, she was a living conundrum: How could she convince people that she really knew what she knew? That she could, indeed, see beyond the obvious? How would she put into words what she sensed when looking at an animal, seeing in their posture or gait what most others do not, cannot, or will not! As well as what that condition was doing to their other body parts.

Not many general-practitioner veterinarians, excluding university professors, have had a book published by an international company; or been published four times in leading veterinarian journals and once in a scientific-research journal. Few, if any, have represented two major, industry-related companies while still practicing veterinary medicine. Who else has lectured across America, established nutritional courses for students worldwide, and become a pioneer in animal rehabilitation?

Dodging many arrows from my industry with tenacity, she have kept fresh her focus on her purpose and her vision in pursuit of new and innovative solutions. She have found unique ways to offer desperate people – animal owners – renewed hope and reassurance that something, indeed, can be done about their ill or injured animal’s or pet’s condition.

Because pivotal incidents in her life enhanced her ability to observe and to know what she is observing, she is an expert today in chiropractic, whole-food nutrition, microcurrent therapy, and exercise physiotherapy. Still, not one to believe everything that she was taught was gospel, her conviction remains to seek and learn more, accepting responsibility for the knowledge that she study and own and transferring her confidence to each animal owner willing to believe in her and what she know.

Although accustomed to informing clients that their pets have a disease condition, a recent diagnosis of her own condition of Lyme Disease has pushed her to learn more about Lyme. She is dealing with “creatures” lurking within her body. Needing more facts and answers, yet not wanting to fuel her enemy, she have begun a new adventure. Parallel to her treatments with dogs – she deal with their ups and downs and mood changes – she now treat her own!

From the less-than-optimal situations that have happened in her life, I gleaned and do apply a formula for decision-making:

  • Take responsibility for what has happened.
  • Assess the situation and discover what caused it, to avoid getting into a similar situation. (“What did I do or not do that got me to this point?”).
  • Find a solution or a way to deal with it and …
  • Ask myself, “What do I now do to help (two- and four-legged) others?”.

Her formula moves her away from “dis-ability” to “respons-ability,” enabling her to respond quickly and effectively and to change a wrong course for the better. She is tackling Lyme and making Lymeade for herself and others!

What is LifeExtend Method?

When Dr. Ava Frick made the decision to transition from a busy rehabilitation clinic to a one-woman show, she enlisted a branding company to help her relate to the public exactly what it is that makes her approach to animal wellness unique. What are the words or phrases or images that help someone who is seeking a better way of health caring for their animals find her? The result of months of their discoveries was Dr. Frick’s LifeExtend Method®.

That is what it is about; innately coordinating a set of well-studied, scientifically based, philosophies and professions, uniquely integrated in such a way that the union of them create an energetic potential greater than any of the individualized entities could alone. The end result being extending lives that are vibrant, that have quality along with quantity, where the animal parent feels good about that relationship and their commitment.

Dr. Ava Frick LifeExtend Method philosophy and delivery, along with being based in traditional veterinary teachings, is expanded by the addition of a Functional Medicine approach. Where the environment, both from an emotional state as well as exposure potentials, are explored. Emotional, is how well the family unit or barn staff and that particular animal’s mental states blend together. Exposure potentials include not just toxins [chemicals and heavy metals], but also virus, bacteria, parasites, allergens, molds, fungus, radiation, and high-power frequencies. It addresses life style, the body’s current condition both metabolically and functionally; assessing systems, organs, glands, tissue, and cellular, all the way to individual cell metabolism. Then offering up a workable plan to eliminate, support, and rejuvenate the body, mind and soul.

Chiropractic is an important aspect to maintaining a strong body through posture, biomechanics, and nervous system stability, function, and feedback. Every nerve moving from and to the brain along the spinal cord exits or enters that “highway” via openings between joint spaces. Every system, organ or gland, every part of the body, is dependent on and effected by the fluid movement of every joint in the body and the nerves traversing those spaces. Nerves are the messengers and without their ability to get to and from – pain, disease and aging ensues. Any deviation from optimal function or motion within any joint space will alter nerve messages between the brain and the body. A chiropractic session can instantly create positive results and it is a key service that bodies need to maintain a long functional life and continually rejuvenate the body, mind and soul.

Exercise is also part of keeping the body in motion. Exercise can be fun, when delivered in the correct gradients for that individual. From a low-impact program to stretching and exercises that cover every zone of the body. This extends to horses as well as demonstrated in her published book; “Fitness in Motion; Keeping Your Equine’s Zones in Peak Performance.” While the book is now out of publication, those same key massage and exercise techniques are available as a flash drive, “Exercises for Horses.” Good posture, balance, and coordination is about fitness in motion because a motionless or stiff body will begin to degenerate. Exercise to any degree is a window that opens flows that then rejuvenate the body, mind and soul.

Everything in life is about Energy. Everything responds to, functions, grows and changes based on wave lengths (frequency), wave heights (amplitude), and wave patterns or waveform. There are some that are beneficial and others that are dangerous; meaning they can alter cells at a microcellular level. In 1997 Dr. Ava Frick discovered Low Level Laser (LLL) as a beneficial therapeutic modality and she created and was the inciting developer of LLL “Spinal Pads” for animals and humans. But that wasn’t enough. In 1999 she began looking toward the human medical industry to find what they had for pain that she could modify for animals. Enter; Alpha-Stim® technology. Alpha-Stim is a way to treat pain by introducing back to the body a gentle proprietary waveform at a low frequency and low amplitude that is in harmony with living species. It gently nudges the cells back toward optimal function, replication, and healing. With an accumulative effect, this therapeutic microcurrent device can reduce or eliminate pain and thereby improve overall well-being.

Growing up on a farm she learned early on the importance of good Nutrition. When Dr. Ava Frick realized that what is in the bag is less than nutritional goodness, she made it her new mission to learn how to introduce it to clients and their animals. Out came her college nutrition books and I aligned with Standard Process to learn about whole food nutrition and quality supplementation. Using food, nature’s medicine, she began to see improved progress in her patients. The better she got at picking the correct item, the quicker they regained better health. There were pet parents whose traditional doctor had told them their animal would soon die, or would never get off of steroids, but we were doing it! Many late nights reading, studying, and figuring it out so that she would own the knowledge, was paying off. Another pillar was now in place.

While that was getting closer to the ideal, there remained times when she still felt like she was guessing at what to recommend regarding supplements. She struggled when an animal was not getting well at the rate she expected. And while she enjoy a good game of darts, she dislike the notion that this is how doctors decide what medication to use on a body. But in reality, it is that way. Scientific but certainly not individualized. Enter Kinesiology. Another ‘aha!’ moment. Here is how she would check the item and its energetic potentials against what the body actually needs or wants. Now the window was open for customized care, assessments, and recommendations.

Over the years Dr. Ava Frick have developed a very specialized system for determining the status of organs, glands, any interferences [virus, bacteria, toxins, parasites, etc.], and then a customized treatment plan with options of therapy, supplements, and even medications when most appropriate. This took the guess work out of her style and introduced a greater level of certainty as well as the ability to target precisely where the problem is and how to handle it. And that is another part of LifeExtend Method and how we get the happy, healthy and rejuvenated animals.

In 2005, still looking to find the real arsonist, Dr. Ava Frick began studying Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis. H-TMA is a scientific laboratory test that uses a hair sample, a DNA blueprint of the past 90 days, and through spectrophotometry, can determine the mineral and toxic metal levels within the tissue of that individual. Every mineral is connected to the others, interlocking and shifting, so as to keep the body functioning best. Understanding this is like working a challenging puzzle. And just as with puzzles, once you have done enough of them, the route to the end becomes easier and easier. By immersing herself into this science, she added a streamline toward knowing the nutrients that are lacking or in excess. Doing this test takes a huge chunk of guess work out of the kaleidoscope going on inside each body. It becomes like a crystal ball, revealing what was going on in the past that got one to this point, and what the future will be if changes are not made. Dr. Ava Frick have published a research paper on this topic and written an educational book that teaches doctors how to integrate this wonderful science and test into their practice’s nutrition model, and are considered one of the leading experts on this topic in the veterinary field.

Dr. Ava Frick is a teacher, but also a student. And some of her best lessons have come from her clients. Case in point was when she was introduced to Ayurveda. While she had taken a 180-hour course on Herbal Phytotherapy in 2003, introducing her to herbs of India, it was merely 5 years ago when she began to learn more about Ayurveda. A client practiced the teachings of this very old India philosophy and medicine. His dog Burney was struggling and he asked Dr. Ava Frick to learn about it in order to help him. He offered to help her along the way. That experience opened thought processes that she had never considered. It gave her new ways to observe and understand what the animal was experiencing and why. And then how to implement better approaches to achieve wellness. It has improved her health and with it she have made inroads to sharing Ayurveda with clients and their fur-babies.

Essential Oils are ancient methods of supporting the immune system, treating ailments and diseases, and supporting the body, mind, and soul. They can be delivered topically, diffused, and some taken orally. Plants have so much good to offer. They are from the earth, of the earth, and can reunite cells in many healing ways. When the correct essential oil is used, there can be magnificent changes throughout. When selecting which is best, she use my kinesiology technique so the guess factor is removed.

And now, in 2021, the introduction of Oberon. Developed in 1990, OBERON is the most revolutionary computer programmed invention available in the world today for analyzing and treating all the body’s organs and functions. This system is based on biofeedback, bioresonance, biofrequencies, and quantum mechanics, analyzed using Non-Linear Statistical Analysis. OBERON can detect the root cause of frequency imbalances in minutes with 95-98% accuracy and has the ability to deliver both diagnostics and therapy in a single session. It is the most unique tool for scanning the various organs and systems of the physical body without having to do blood tests or biopsies.

Biofeedback utilizes the fact that each organ, tissue, and cell in a body has a distinct frequency which is made possible by the rotation of atoms in the cells. When instructions are sent to the body from the brain, they use the spinal cord to send those instructions via nerves and other molecular aids. As long as the connection between the brain and the spine is intact, biofeedback systems can use the brain to listen in and pick up the information.

Oberon, can trace the changes in pathology and infections by observing the characteristics of these wavelengths and the changes in the tissues and cells of the body. This utilization of frequency analysis is based on the incredible discovery in natural science which allows us to analyze the magnetic vortex of any biological object. This system can be applied when the animal is in the office and it can also be used via the mechanisms of Quantum physics and DNA-cell-body recognition. It allows Dr. Ava Frick to assess animals, the pathology and causes, as well as treat in a single session. Then she can make tinctures to send home for continued therapy between visits.

Her philosophy is that traditional practices seek to put out fires, she work at finding the arsonist, and then there are no fires. That is why Dr. Frick’s LifeExtend Method is successful in creating happy, healthy, and naturally rejuvenated animals.

The LifeExtend Method

There are many kinds of conditions that Dr. Ava Frick have treated using LifeExtend Method. In some cases she have to begin with addressing the organs so that they can become strong enough to do their part in healing the body. After which she go after the arsonist. Because if she can target the etiology, then all of the secondary issues will disappear too.
So instead of doing the same thing over and over with minimal success (like repeated antibiotics, steroids, drugs that further impact optimal function), she create a graduated plan to support, improve, and augment organ and glandular function. Then, when the body is ready, tackle the enemy that is present.

That way we are less likely to cause more discomfort and illness along the path to having a happy, healthy, and naturally rejuvenated animal. Her preferences are blending customized nutritional supplementation, herbal therapies, homeopathic preparations, and/or essential oils sourced from Ayurveda, Eastern, and Western principles. For bodywork, specific therapeutic modalities such as Alpha-Stim® microcurrent therapy, laser, ultrasound, Q-gong, saunas, kinesiotape, splinting, and massage can be added to chiropractic to reduce pain and further improve comfort, function, and posture.

About Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)

FUR ANALYSIS IS A MINERAL BLUEPRINT

LifeExtend Method is a philosophy for wellness that Dr. Ava Frick have studied and successfully applied to many animals over the past 20 years. With the LifeExtend Method, she is helping you achieve your wish; to have a Happy, Healthy, and Naturally Rejuvenated Animal.  Her philosophy and approach focus on exercise, nutrition, and a body with good postural alignment, for a life without stress and pain.

Providing a mineral blueprint of one’s biochemistry a fur tissue mineral analysis can provide pertinent information about your animal’s metabolic rate, energy levels, sugar and carbohydrate tolerance, stage of stress, immune system and glandular activity.  A hair tissue mineral analysis is considered a standard test, used around the world for the biological monitoring of trace elements and toxic metals in humans and animals species. Fur, like all other body tissues, contains minerals that are deposited as the fur grows.  A sample of fur cut close to the skin provides information about the mineral activity in the fur that took place over the past three to four months.

Hair analysis on dogs and cats can help Dr. Frick determine what is happening with the thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary glands. It will give an indication of how that animal deals with carbohydrates, sugars, available protein, enzymes, and their energy level. Changes in key minerals, mineral ratios, and the presence of toxic metals can affect personality and behavior in ways we find unhealthy and undesirable, but the animal cannot help it. Understanding the animal’s oxidation rate, we know how quickly they are changing food to energy. With all that valuable information a very customized nutritional assessment, supplements, and dietary recommendations can be made.

Dr. Frick and her research was published by the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association in the Fall 2017 issue.  She is very excited about this recognition.  Read the publication below. Then contact us or her to see how she can help you help animals by utilizing this test modality.

WHY DR. AVA FRICK USE FUR MINERAL TESTING TO CUSTOMIZE NUTRITION PROGRAMS FOR YOUR ANIMALS.

There are many ways to assess nutritional status including the clinical animal nutrition survey, iridology, kinesiology, dietary guidelines, computer analysis, blood tests, etc. One often missed method is by measuring tissue mineral levels. Here are 12 reasons that validate the comprehensive information gleaned from this testing method.

  • A Window into the Cells

Nutritional physiology begins at the cellular level, not within blood or any other location. What you feed your pet is only part of the picture. More importantly, is what is actually reaching the body cells. Tissue mineral analysis (TMA) is unique in that it provides cellular activity information – the main site of nutritional metabolism.

  • Assessing Organ, Gland and Tissue Function

Levels and ratios of tissue minerals relate to the activity of specific organs and glands. By calculating rations on a TMA, the function of major glands and organs can be assessed, often long before abnormalities appear on radiographs or blood tests.

  • Constructing a Picture of Individual Body Chemistry

The correct interpretation is key to constructing a metabolic picture of the way your pet’s body is functioning and responding to stress. There is no other simple and inexpensive test that gives the doctor so much valuable information about overall body cellular physiology and function.

  • Determining Oxidation Types

Dr. George Watson discovered that some bodies burn food at a more rapid rate than normal, and some at a slower rate. Knowing the metabolism, or oxidation rate as he called it, can help determine which foods are most needed, and which nutrients would be most helpful to restore balance.

  • Detecting Toxic Metals

Toxic metals are a serious problem, contributing to many metabolic disorders including infections, heart disease, allergies, lethargy, erratic or behavior changes, digestive disturbances, cancer and diabetes. While routine blood tests cannot detect chronic heavy metal poisoning, TMA is one of the few methods by the Environmental Protection Agency for detecting toxic metals in the body.

  • Rebuilding the Body’s Energy Mechanism

Having an adequate energy level is essential for health. All body activities including healing depend upon adequate energy synthesis. TMA can be used to assess the efficiency of the energy system of the body including carbohydrate/sugar and citric acid cycles, and to recommend nutrients and foods that will assist in rebuilding the energy system.

  • Understanding Emotions and Behavior

Biochemical imbalances can contribute to many mental and emotional conditions. There is no other tool that even comes close to TMA to predict, explain, and offer nutritional solutions for such common complaints as fearfulness, anxiety, hyperactivity, phobias, insomnia, and cognitive dysfunction.

  • Identifying Trends

One of the most useful benefits of TMA is the ability to identify trends before they occur, so that action can be taken to avoid them. I like to call it a Crystal Ball. Twenty or more trends can be identified from a properly interpreted TMA. The ability to identify trends alone makes TMA an invaluable test. This is the way to help your new pet not go down the same trail that your others have in the past.

  • Monitoring Progress

A common problem in nutritional therapy is determining if the animal is actually improving, especially if some conditions persists or new issues arise. Repeat TMA tests compared to previous tests can often provide answers as to whether improvement is occurring, why some conditions persist, and what to expect in the future.

  • Exact Amounts of Supplements and Proportions of Foods

One problem in designing nutrition programs is determining how much and which nutrients and foods to recommend. Because of its mathematical nature, fur TMA offers a way to determine supplements needed and proportions of food ingredients and types with greater accuracy.

  • Superiority Over Blood Tests

Blood tests will always be valuable to determine cholesterol, liver, and kidney function and many other parameters. However, blood tests are incapable of providing the information that we get from TMA. Mineral levels in blood are ten times less than they are in the tissues, making measurement difficult. Also, blood levels are kept within very narrow limits by the body for various reasons, so that reading vary but little and less information can be gleaned. Blood test are subject to daily fluctuations due to foods eaten, medications, activity, and emotional states, etc. Fur analysis will not vary from day-to-day, and provides a long-term metabolic blueprint. Understanding this difference avoids much confusion.

  • Accuracy and Reliability

Computerized mass spectrometer testing is a very technical system that can yield accurate results. Analyzing samples that are not washed at the laboratory prior to testing gives the truest mineral levels within the body. Washing samples will reduce the levels of loosely bound minerals and effect the final report.

SCIENTIFIC REPORT: TISSUE MINERAL ANALYSIS PATTERNS IN 564 DOGS

Abstract: Tissue Mineral Analysis (TMA) is a technique using soft tissue hair or fur biopsy that provides a reading of the mineral deposition in the cells and interstitial spaces of the hair over a 2 to 3 month period. TMA can be used to understand metabolism. It is another scientific measure that can expand our understanding of health and processes that impact illness in dogs. Mineral excess or deficiency is known to produce certain physical and psychological symptoms. The correlation of TMA results with clinical signs seen in patients is discussed in this paper.

Tissue mineral levels and electrolyte patterns of calcium(Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and potassium (K) were analyzed in 564 dogs (300 male, 264 female; 99% neutered or spayed) of variable breeds. Their ages ranged from 1 to 15 years. Cases included all dogs presented to the authors within a 12-year period.
